PAU CASALS GRANT
Rules for the award, 2011–12 edition
1. Aim
The PAU CASALS GRANT, which is awarded by the Fundació Pau Casals, seeks to assist young cellists to enable them to broaden their study of the instrument, in order to perfect their technique and interpretative skills, through giving their studies continuity and enabling them to study with outstanding established players.
2. Amount of the grant
The amount of the grant is €12,000.
3. Participation in concerts
In addition to the financial award, the grant includes the opportunity to be invited to take part in concerts for young performers during the two years following the award of the grant, as well as in the grant-winner’s concert with the Camerata XXI orchestra, organised by the Patronat Municipal Auditori Pau Casals and the Fundació. The grant-winner undertakes to take part in at least three concerts within these years. No fee will be paid for participation in these concerts, although if appropriate an arrangement may be made regarding the costs of travel and lodging if a concert takes place more than 100 kilometres from El Vendrell.
4. Candidates
The grant is open to cellists who meet the following criteria:
a) Students of the Advanced grade of cello studies, or those who have successfully completed it.
b) Students born in the State of Spain, Andorra, the French Department of Pyrénées-Orientales, and foreign students who have resided in one of these territories for at least two consecutive years, including the year during which the grant application is made.
c) Students born after 31 December 1986.
All students who comply with the above criteria may apply for the grant, regardless of whether they have previously received grants from the Fundació.
5. Secretariat and presentation of applications
Documents to be produced:
a) Personal details: photocopy of National Identity Document or other document to certify the applicant complies with point 4b of these rules; current address, contact telephone number and e-mail.
b) Certification of courses completed, performances as instrumentalist (programmes, reviews), recent course reports from professors and principals.
c) Outline of proposed areas of study, justifying and explaining the motives for the choice, the place of study and acceptance by the teacher who is to direct the studies (or is directing them), as well as acceptance by the institution where the studies are to take place. When necessary, this acceptance may be delayed until the agreement with the Fundació is signed. In addition, a statement of the financial cost of the studies must be produced.
d) Statement of other assistance or grants for the same studies that has been awarded or has been applied for. Being in receipt of other assistance may disqualify the applicant for the grant.
e) Statement of musical compositions to be performed before the jury, and their length (in the event the applicant is selected for the final test).
f) DVD with a recent recording of the applicant playing a Prelude by J. S. Bach and one of Popper’s op. 73 Études to be selected among numbers 7, 9,13, 14, 15, 20, 24, 32 or 33.
Presentation of applications:
Cellists who wish to apply for this edition of the grant must send their documentation by e-mail to fundacio@paucasals.org and the DVD (item f above) by physical mail to Fundació Pau Casals, C/ Sant Pere Més Alt,1, 4t 2a, 08003 Barcelona) before 8 January 2012. 6. Jury and test performance
The Fundació will designate a jury to examine the applications and to award the grant. The jury’s decision shall be final, and after assessing the applications it will select ten for the final test. Candidates called to the final will be informed before 15 February 2012. The candidates who are not selected for the final will be informed to this effect by the Fundació.
Applicants who are selected must play before the jury, in private, the Prelude, Sarabande and Gigue from one of J. S Bach’s solo cello suites (to be chosen by the applicant and played without repeats) and the first movement with cadenza (free) of the D major cello concerto by Haydn. For this performance, there will be a piano to provide the accompaniment. Candidates may provide their own pianist, or may choose to be accompanied by a pianist proposed by the organisation.
The jury may interview the candidates and ask them for their plans for study. The tests will take place at the Pau Casals Municipal School of Music in El Vendrell, Passatge del Tivoli, 3-7, El Vendrell on Saturday 5 May 2012 during the morning. The Fundació will inform candidates of the time.
7. Award of the grant
In the evening of 5 May the grant-winner’s Concert will take place with the Camerata XXI orchestra and the participation of the current holder of the Fundacio’s grant. During the concert, the Fundació will announce the winner of the grant. The new grant-winner must be present and will sign an agreement specifying the obligations undertaken by both parties.
8. Final condition
The grant-winner undertakes to mention, in his or her CV and in connection with any performances in which they take part, from the time of the award of the grant and for a period of at least five years, that fact that they have received the PAU CASALS GRANT and the year of its award.
