Performers

This concert series is part of the research project “The Sound of Pau Casals”, funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation (PID2021-124445OA-I00). One of its goals is to bring academic findings into current performance practice. With the collaboration of renowned cellists and chamber musicians, the project culminates in a series of concerts inspired by Casals’ sound and performance style as a cellist, based on the data gathered through the research. This concert cycle offers the audience a unique opportunity to rediscover the master’s interpretation—from his concert programs to his own compositions for cello.

Seating is limited. Tickets must be purchased in advance at www.ticketsonline.paucasals.org. For more information, you may email museu@paucasals.org or call 977684276.

Lluís Claret, cello

Born in the Principality of Andorra to exiled Catalan parents, he began his musical studies inspired by the figure of his godfather, Pau Casals.

Later, his family settled in Barcelona, where he studied at the Conservatori del Liceu. For many years he took lessons from Enric Casals, Pau’s brother, who, although not a cellist, became his main mentor and musical father.

His encounters with Radu Aldulescu, György Sebök, Eva Janzer, Maurice Gendron, and Bernard Greenhouse also deeply shaped his musical personality.

Winner of the First Prize at both the Pau Casals and Mstislav Rostropovich competitions, his career has taken him all over the world, both as a soloist and as a passionate chamber musician (founder of the Trio de Barcelona, member of the Berlin Trio, and duo partner of Josep Maria Colom).

His interest in contemporary music has led him to collaborate with major composers such as Pierre Boulez, Witold Lutosławski, Krzysztof Penderecki, Joan Guinjoan, Salvador Brotons, Tomás Garrido, and Agustí Charles, among others.

His deep commitment to teaching has enabled him to serve as a professor for over 20 years at the Toulouse Conservatory and for 10 years at the Victoria dels Àngels Conservatory in Sant Cugat del Vallès. He regularly gives masterclasses across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

He currently teaches at the Conservatori Superior del Liceu in Barcelona and at the New England Conservatory in Boston. He also offers annual masterclasses at VIU (Valencia International University) and at the Talent Music Masters Academy in Brescia, Italy.

He plays a cello made by Nicolas Lupot (Paris, 1820).

Àlex Ramírez, piano

Born in Barcelona, he focuses mainly on chamber music. He is a founding member of the Trio Da Vinci (2018). Since his debut at L’Auditori in Barcelona (Festival Emergents 2021), he has performed at internationally renowned festivals such as the Pau Casals Festival (Prades, France), the Festival de Torroella de Montgrí, and the Radio France Festival (Montpellier, France), and in chamber seasons at the Palau de la Música Catalana, L’Auditori de Barcelona, the Palau de la Música in Valencia, and the Schubertiade in Fribourg (Switzerland), among others. This season, he performed Beethoven’s Triple Concerto for the first time with the OSSC.

In addition to his activity with Trio Da Vinci, in recent seasons he has performed with various chamber groups at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam (Netherlands), the Slovak Philharmonic in Bratislava (Slovakia), the Kronberg Festival (Germany), the Beethoven 250 Festival at L’Auditori de Barcelona, the chamber season of the Palau de la Música Catalana, and the Schubertiade de Vilabertran. He has also collaborated as a chamber musician with the OCP (Orchestre de Chambre de Paris) and with OBC Cambra (the Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra).

As a soloist, he has performed with the Andorra National Chamber Orchestra (ONCA) at the Palau de la Música Catalana, with the Vallès Symphony Orchestra (OSV), and in recital at L’Auditori de Barcelona as part of the “Auditori XXI” series.

He has taken part in numerous theatrical productions, collaborating with the puppet company Títeres Etcétera, Murtra Ensemble, stage director Calixto Bieito, and dance group Brodas Bros, performing at the Santander International Festival, San Sebastián Musical Fortnight, Festival of Wonder in Silkeborg (Denmark), Théâtre 13 in Paris (France), and major venues in Barcelona including the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Teatre Romea, Mercat de les Flors, and the TNC.

As an educator, he has served as an assistant professor to his two main teachers, Josep Colom and Margarita Serrat. He has also taught at the superior conservatories of the Liceu (Barcelona), Zaragoza, and Palma de Mallorca. Since 2016, he has been an annual guest at the IHMS academy and festival in Bergen (Netherlands).

Anna Mora

Born and trained in Barcelona, she divides her musical activity between performance, cello teaching, and musicological research.

Anna sees herself as a heir to the Catalan school of cello, through the teachings of Lluís Claret, Enric Casals, and Bernard Greenhouse. As a member of various chamber groups, she has performed in Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Korea, and the United States. She was a member of the Vallès Symphony Orchestra, holding the position of assistant principal cellist.

Anna is the founder of the Clara Schumann Ensemble, focused on the performance and promotion of women composers throughout history. Her teaching method emphasizes ensemble cello practice as a means of both musical and humanistic education. In line with this, she founded and has directed GRUPCELLO.CAT since 2010, involving young cellists from all over Catalonia who have performed in Spain, France, and various European venues.

In July, they will perform The Phantom of the Opera in Barcelona alongside the Musical’s Choir, conducted by Cristina Colomer.

Her interest in musicological research has led her to co-author several collections of Pau Casals’ correspondence with Anna Dalmau, which have been presented in conferences in Lyon, Paris, Andorra, Barcelona, and Lisbon.

Her latest book, Querido Maestro. Correspondencia (1893–1973), was published in October 2024 by Editorial Acantilado.

Together with pianist Glòria Peig, she presents the program “Pau Casals: the Sound of His Letters”, featuring works by some of Casals’ correspondents as well as the maestro himself.
