On May 22, 23, and 24 at 6:00 PM, the Pau Casals Museum will host an exceptional concert series as part of the research project The Sound of Pau Casals, featuring renowned cellists Lluís Claret, Iagoba Fanlo, and Damià Martínez. This initiative offers a unique opportunity to relive the interpretative style of one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century through live music.
A pioneering research project on Casals’ sound
The concert series is part of the research project The Sound of Pau Casals, developed by the Instituto Complutense de Ciencias Musicales with the support of the Pau Casals Foundation and funding from the Ministry of Science and Innovation. Directed by musicologist, professor, and cellist Ana Llorens, the project combines technology, historical research, and performance practice to delve into Casals’ sound and technique.
The team has analyzed over 100 historical recordings of Casals, from the 1910s through his later years as a conductor in the 1960s and 70s. The main goal is to better understand the evolution of his style and apply these findings to contemporary musical interpretation.
Three concerts inspired by the musical essence of Casals
The project culminates in a series of concerts that will take place in the Music Hall at the Pau Casals Museum in El Vendrell. Lluís Claret, Iagoba Fanlo, and Damià Martínez, three leading cellists on today’s music scene, will present a repertoire directly inspired by the sound, technique, and musical vision of Pau Casals.
Each concert is a window into Casals’ interpretative universe, with programs that recreate his unique style and artistic sensitivity. It’s a chance to rediscover classical music through an innovative lens while remaining faithful to the spirit of the maestro.
