Music and Social Commitment
The centenary of the Pau Casals Orchestra’s first concert at the Palau de la Música Catalana was commemorated on 13th October 2020. This was a project that Pablo Casals promoted and created in 1919 and which, as the musician himself acknowledged, was one of the most fruitful challenges of his artistic and professional life. Thanks to the strength and excellence of its work, the ensemble became an exceptional, internationally recognised symphony orchestra in a very short space of time. The orchestra turned Barcelona into a meeting point for the best conductors and soloists of the time, making it an advanced city for good music and open to contemporary composers. Unfortunately, this project ended for good with the Spanish Civil War and the effects of the dictatorship.
The Pau Casals Foundation has promoted this centenary with activities and projects carried out throughout 2020-2021 by musicians and musical institutions from all over the world, led by a Committee of Honour made up of internationally renowned individuals. The Centenary of the Orchestra Pau Casals has been declared an “official commemoration of 2020” by the Government of Catalonia, and has the support of the Department of Culture,El Vendrell Town Council, Barcelona Provincial Council, and Tarragona Provincial Council, Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), the Pau Casals Foundation’s Patronage Committee and the special collaboration and support of the ”la Caixa” Foundation.
