Mariona Camats, Pablo Casals International Scholarship winner

The final audition of the Pablo Casals International Scholarship was held on 1st October 2018 in the Municipal School of Music Auditorium in El Vendrell. The jury for that edition was made up of Marta Casals, Vice-President of the Pablo Casals Foundation; the cellists Julius Berger, Claudio Bohórquez and Lluís Claret; the pianist Josep M. Escribano Casaldàliga and Jordi Pardo, Director of the Pau Casals Foundation.

She was born in La Garriga (Barcelona) in 1997, and began to play the cello at the age of six under the tutelage of Anna Mora and later of Lluís Claret. She is currently studying at the Leopold Mozart Zentrum at the University of Augsburg (Germany) with Professor Julius Berger. In October 2016, she won the Pablo Casals International Scholarship, awarded every two years by the Pau Casals Foundation, and has received masterclasses from Gary Hoffman, Jens Peter Maintz, Laurence Lesser, Amit Peled, Young-Chang Cho, Maria de Macedo, José Mor and Asier Polo, among others. She has taken part in The International Holland Music Sessions, the Mozarteum International Sommerakademie in Salzburg and the Kronberg Academy masterclasses, among other courses.

So far she has won several first prizes, including the Young Performers Competition, Sant Cugat del Vallès (2009 and 2011), the Cordes de Barcelona Contest (2012), the “Grand Prix” prize at the FLAME Competition in Paris (2012), the first prize at the VicCelloFestival (2014) and the Johannes-Andreas-Stein Wettbewerb (2016).

Apart from masterclasses and performances in France, Germany, England, Italy, Holland and Austria, she has also collaborated, inter alia, with the group Violoncel·listes de Barcelona, with the Corella Ballet Company and, as a soloist, with the Jove Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès (conducted by Gilles Apap), the Camera Musicae Orchestra (conducted by Tomàs Grau), the JONC Philarmonia (conducted by Manel Valdivieso) and the Bruckner Akademie Orchester (conducted by Jordi Mora). Most recently, she has been part of the Xarxa de Músiques 2017-18 season of the Joventuts Musicals de Catalunya.
