We present the results of the 2023 Research Grants from the Pau Casals UNESCO Chair

The UNESCO Pau Casals Chair, in collaboration with the Pau Casals Foundation and the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), presents the results of the two projects selected in the first call for 2023 research grants. The event, open to the public, will take place on Thursday, March 20, at 6:00 PM at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC). Additionally, the new publication series Papers de la Càtedra will be introduced.

Research on Pau Casals’ Legacy

The selected projects explore Pau Casals’ humanistic commitment and musical heritage, contributing to the dissemination of his legacy. The selection committee highlighted the quality and relevance of the proposals presented, awarding the grants to the following projects:

1. Protection of Musicians at Risk: Pau Casals’ Influence

“The evolution of international protection mechanisms for musicians at risk. A historical perspective exploring Pau Casals’s legacy”. Research by Laurence Cuny, linked to her doctoral thesis at Université Laval and Université Paris 1 Sorbonne.

2. Pau Casals’ Sardana Compositions

“From Festívola to the Prelude of El Pessebre: A first approach to Pau Casals’ musical catalogue through his sardanas”. A project developed by Anna Costal and Albert Fontelles under the Research Group in Cultural and Musical Studies (GRECUM) at ESMUC.

Publication and Access to the Results

The results of these studies will be published in the new Papers de la Càtedra collection, available on the UNESCO Pau Casals Chair website and in the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) Repository.

Supported by AIE (Entidad de Gestión de los Artistas Intérpretes o Ejecutantes de la música) in collaboration with ESMUC.
